Nature of ManagementManagement is science or art or profession. Some scholars call management as art, because the manager is concerned with the practical use of knowledge and skills. While some scholars consider it to be science because it represents the principles properly examined. Some even consider it a profession.
1 Management as an art: – Art has some characteristics which are as follows: –
(i) theoretical knowledge – for which order and organization study material is required to be available.
(ii) Personal use – One person works differently from another, because each person has a different style of working.
(iii) Practice and Creativity- Art consists of existing scientific knowledge, creativity and practice. The ability of a performer depends on how much he has practiced and how creative he is. There is also a lot of literature related to different areas of bondage. All managers run the business differently depending on their level of knowledge and every manager moves through practice, creativity, combination of renovation etc.
Management consists of all the characteristics of art, so it can be called art.
2 Management as a science: – Science is a systematic knowledge of a subject which is based on certain principles with correct conclusions, which can be examined.
Science has the following characteristics: –
1. A hierarchical form of knowledge which is based on principles, exercises and experiments.
2. Theory based on experiment and observation.
3. Universally accepted principles that can be proved anywhere and anytime.
4. Cause and effect: In relation science, the cause and effect of all the parts is related. There is also a systematic form of principles and rules in management, which are helpful in understanding organizational practices. The management has its own principles which establish the relation between the battle and the effect, but like science these principles are not accurate, they can be improved according to the situation.
Human nature is changeable, so due to the existence of human element, management is not a pure science but a social science.
3 Profession Management: – Profession is the means of living that is done to serve different sections of the society by specialized knowledge and training. In which admission is prohibited.
Its main features are as follows: –
1. A well-defined body of knowledge: – All professions are based on a set of defined knowledge which is acquired by education.
2. Prohibited Admission: – Every profession is admitted on the basis of education or educational qualification.
3. Service Objective: – The main objective of each profession is to serve its customers.
4. Code of Ethical Conduct: – All professions are associated with some professional association which regulates their entry. It is not compulsory for a manager to have any specific degree or license nor to follow any code of conduct.
Management does not satisfy all the characteristics of the profession, so it cannot be called a full profession.
