Question 1: What is the light ?

Answer: Light is a form of energy that travels in a straight path.

Question 2: What is the reflection of light?

Answer: When light falls on the non transparent object and bounces back it is called reflection of light.

Question 3 What are the laws of reflection ?

Answer: Laws of reflection are : (1) The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. (2) The incident ray, the normal to the mirror at the point of incidence and the reflected ray, all lie in the same plane.

Question 4 What is an incident ray?

Answer: When a ray falls on an object it is called incident ray.

Question 5 What is reflected ray?

Answer: When a ray bounces back or reflected by an object is called reflected ray.

Question 6 What is a plane mirror ?

Answer: A flat reflecting surface who is polished at the back of the reflecting surface.

Question 7 Write the properties of a plane mirror.

Answer: Properties of a plane mirror are :

(1) Images formed by a plane mirror are always virtual and erect.

(2) The size of the image is equal to the object.

(3) The image formed behind the mirror.

(4) The image is laterally inverted.

Question 8 What are spherical mirrors ?

Answer: Mirrors, whose reflecting surfaces are spherical, called spherical mirrors.

Question 9 Which is the most commonly used curved mirror ?

Answer: Spherical mirror.

Question 10 What are the types of spherical mirrors ?

Answer: Types of spherical mirrors are (1) Concave mirror or Converging mirror (2) Convex mirror or Divergent mirror.

Question 11 What is the concave mirror?

Answer: A spherical mirror whose reflecting surface is curved inward and polished outward that converges all the rays at a point is called a concave mirror.

Question 12 What is the convex mirror ?

Answer: A spherical mirror whose reflecting surface is curved outwards and Polished inwards, that diverges all the rays is called convex mirror.

Question 13 How spherical mirrors are formed ?

Answer: Spherical mirrors are formed by cutting a sphere.

Question 14: What is the pole of the mirror ?

Answer: The center of the reflecting surface of a spherical mirror is called a pole of the mirror.

Question 15 What is meant by P in a spherical mirror ?

Answer:  P represents the pole of a spherical mirror

Question 16 What is the center of curvature ?

Answer:  the center of the sphere of which the spherical mirror is a part

Question 17 What is meant by c in spherical mirrors ?

Answer:  C represents the center of curvature in spherical mirror

Question 18:  where the center of curvature lies in a concave mirror ?

Answer:  in front of it

Question 19: where the center of curvature lies in a convex mirror ?

Answer:  In behind of mirror.

Question 20: What is the radius of curvature ?

Answer:  the distance between the center of curvature and the spherical mirror this radius will intersect the mirror at the pole.

Question 21: What is the meaning of R in a spherical mirror ?

Answer:  R represents the radius of curvature of the mirror.

Question 22 : What is the focal length?

Answer: The distance between the pole and the principal focus is called focal length of a mirror.

Question 23 : Is there a relation between the radius of curvature and focal length?

Answer:  Yes, the radius of curvature is found to be equal to twice the focal length r=2f.

Question 24 : What is the principal axis ?

Answer: The straight line passing through the pole at the center of curvature is called the principal axis.

Question 25 What is the F in spherical mirrors ?

Answer : F is denoted as the focus of a spherical mirror.

Question 26 What is the focus ?

Answer: All rays  parallel to the principal axis converge at a point between the pole and center of curvature; this point is called as the focus point.

Question 27 What is the f in spherical mirrors ?

Answer:  f is the focal length of a spherical mirror.

Question 28 What is the aperture ?

Answer:  The diameter of the reflecting surface of the spherical mirror is called aperture.

Question 29 How was a sheet of paper burned with sunlight ?

Answer:  We use a concave mirror because it converges all the rays at a point.

Question 30 How are the rays parallel to the principal axis reflected by a convex mirror?

Answer:  Any incident rate traveling parallel to the principal axis on the way to a convex mirror will be reflected in such a manner that when it extends it passes through the focus.

Question 31 What happens if the rays are parallel to the principal axis ?

Answer:  it passes through focus after reflecting.

Question 32 in convex lens mirror the ray Parallel and meet at focus ?

Answer:  Yes but this time we have extended the ray to the focus by a dotted line.

Question 33 What happens if the ray is passing through focus ?

Answer:  Rays passing through focus after reflection parallel to the principal axis.

Question 34 What happens if the ray is passing through the center of curvature ?

Answer:  When the rays pass through the center of curvature after reflection it goes on the same path.

Question 35 What happens if rays fall on the pole ?

Answer:  When rays fall on the pole after reflection it makes the same and equal angle from the principal axis.

Question 36 What happens if there is fall on the concave mirror ?

Answer:  It converges all rays at a point.

Question 37 What happens if the rays  fall on the convex mirror ?

Answer:  It diverges all rays.

Question 38 Where the concave mirror is used ?

Answer:  It is used in torch, vehicle headlight, shaving mirror etc.

Question 39 Why concave mirrors are used in vehicle headlights ?

Answer:   Because to get the powerful parallel beams of light.

Question 40 Why dentists use concave mirrors ?

Answer:  Dentists use concave mirrors  to see large images of the teeth of patients.

Question 41 Which mirror is used in a solar furnace and why ?

Answer:  Concave mirrors are used in solar furnaces because it converges sunlight to produce heat.

Question 42 Where the convex mirrors are used ?

Answer: Convex mirrors are used in rear view mirrors of vehicles , parking lots at sharp cuts etc.

Question 43 Why convex mirrors are used in rear view mirrors of vehicles ?

Answer:  Because they show a wider range of view with their smaller virtual image it helps the driver to see the road after turn.
