1. Introduction / परिचय
This story is written by Ruskin Bond. It is about a young thief named Hari Singh who learns the value of trust and education after meeting a kind man, Anil.
यह कहानी रसकिन बॉन्ड द्वारा लिखी गई है। यह एक युवा चोर हरी सिंह की कहानी है, जो अनिल नामक एक दयालु व्यक्ति से मिलकर विश्वास और शिक्षा का महत्व समझता है।
2. Meeting with Anil / अनिल से मुलाक़ात
Hari Singh, a 15-year-old thief, meets Anil while he is watching a wrestling match. Anil is about 25 years old — kind, simple, and honest. Hari Singh wants to win his trust to rob him later.
15 वर्षीय चोर हरी सिंह की मुलाक़ात अनिल से तब होती है जब वह कुश्ती देख रहा होता है। अनिल लगभग 25 वर्ष का, दयालु और सरल स्वभाव का व्यक्ति है। हरी सिंह उसका विश्वास जीतना चाहता है ताकि बाद में उसे लूट सके।
3. Beginning of Work / काम की शुरुआत
Anil agrees to keep him if he can cook. Hari lies that he can cook. The food he makes is terrible, yet Anil forgives him and says he will teach him how to cook, read, and write.
अनिल कहता है कि अगर वह खाना बना सकता है तो उसे रख लेगा। हरी झूठ बोल देता है कि वह खाना बना सकता है। उसका बनाया खाना बहुत ख़राब होता है, फिर भी अनिल उसे माफ़ कर देता है और कहता है कि वह उसे खाना बनाना, पढ़ना और लिखना सिखाएगा।
4. Daily Life with Anil / अनिल के साथ दैनिक जीवन
Hari starts living with Anil. He makes tea in the morning and goes shopping. He cheats a little and saves one rupee daily, but Anil never minds.
हरी अब अनिल के साथ रहने लगता है। वह सुबह चाय बनाता है और बाज़ार जाता है। वह थोड़ा धोखा देकर रोज़ एक रुपया बचा लेता है, लेकिन अनिल को कोई आपत्ति नहीं होती।
5. The Theft / चोरी की घटना
One day, Anil gets 600 rupees after selling a book. At night, Hari steals the money and plans to run away to Lucknow. But at the station, he hesitates and misses the train.
एक दिन अनिल को किताब बेचने के बदले 600 रुपये मिलते हैं। रात में हरी पैसे चुरा लेता है और लखनऊ भागने का सोचता है, लेकिन स्टेशन पर पहुँचकर उसका मन बदल जाता है और वह ट्रेन नहीं पकड़ पाता।
6. Realisation / आत्मबोध
It rains heavily that night. Hari feels sad and realizes that Anil will be hurt — not for losing money, but for losing trust. He decides to return.
उस रात भारी बारिश होती है। हरी को अफ़सोस होता है और वह समझता है कि अनिल को पैसे के नहीं, बल्कि विश्वास खोने के दुख से चोट लगेगी। वह वापस लौटने का निर्णय लेता है।
7. Return and Forgiveness / वापसी और क्षमा
Hari quietly returns and puts the money back under the mattress. Next morning, Anil gives him a fifty-rupee note and says, “Now you’ll be paid regularly.” The note is wet — Anil knows everything, but says nothing.
हरी चुपचाप लौटकर पैसे गद्दे के नीचे रख देता है। अगले दिन अनिल उसे पचास रुपये देता है और कहता है — “अब तुम्हें नियमित वेतन मिलेगा।” नोट भीगा हुआ होता है — यानी अनिल को सब पता है, पर वह कुछ नहीं कहता।
8. Ending / अंत
Anil tells him, “Today we’ll start writing sentences.” Hari smiles honestly for the first time. He realizes that learning and honesty are more valuable than money.
अनिल कहता है — “आज से हम पूरे वाक्य लिखना शुरू करेंगे।”
हरी पहली बार सच्चे दिल से मुस्कराता है। उसे एहसास होता है कि ईमानदारी और शिक्षा धन से अधिक मूल्यवान हैं।
