GRANDFATHER bought Toto from a tonga-driver for the sum of five rupees.
दादाजी ने टोतो को एक टांगेवाले से पाँच रुपये में खरीदा।
The tonga-driver used to keep the little red monkey tied to a feeding-trough,
वह टांगेवाला उस छोटे लाल बंदर को एक चारे की नांद से बाँध कर रखता था,
and the monkey looked so out of place there that Grandfather decided he would add the little fellow to his private zoo.
और वह बंदर वहाँ इतना अजीब लगता था कि दादाजी ने तय किया कि वह इस छोटे जीव को अपने निजी चिड़ियाघर में शामिल करेंगे।
Toto was a pretty monkey.
टोतो एक सुंदर बंदर था।
His bright eyes sparkled with mischief beneath deep-set eyebrows,
उसकी चमकदार आँखें गहरी बैठी हुई भौंहों के नीचे शरारत से चमकती थीं,
and his teeth, which were a pearly white, were very often displayed in a smile that frightened the life out of elderly Anglo-Indian ladies.
और उसके दाँत, जो मोती जैसे सफेद थे, अक्सर एक ऐसी मुस्कान में दिखाई देते थे जो बुजुर्ग एंग्लो-इंडियन महिलाओं को डरा देती थी।
But his hands looked dried-up as though they had been pickled in the sun for many years.

Yet his fingers were quick and wicked;

Grandmother always fussed when Grandfather brought home some new bird or animal.

So it was decided that Toto’s presence should be kept a secret from her until she was in a particularly good mood.
इसलिए यह तय किया गया कि जब तक दादी का मूड बहुत अच्छा न हो, तब तक टोतो की मौजूदगी उनसे छिपाकर रखी जाए।
Grandfather and I put him away in a little closet opening into my bedroom wall,
दादाजी और मैंने उसे मेरी शयनकक्ष की दीवार में खुलने वाली एक छोटी सी अलमारी में रख दिया,
where he was tied securely — or so we thought — to a peg fastened into the wall.

A few hours later, when Grandfather and I came back to release Toto,
कुछ घंटे बाद, जब दादाजी और मैं टोतो को छोड़ने वापस आए,
we found that the walls, which had been covered with some ornamental paper chosen by Grandfather,

now stood out as naked brick and plaster.

and my school blazer, which had been hanging there, was in shreds.

I wondered what Grandmother would say.

But Grandfather didn’t worry; he seemed pleased with Toto’s performance.

“He’s clever,” said Grandfather.
“वह बहुत होशियार है,” दादाजी ने कहा।
“Given time, I’m sure he could have tied the torn pieces of your blazer into a rope, and made his escape from the window!”
“अगर उसे थोड़ा और समय मिलता, तो यकीनन वह तुम्हारे फटे हुए ब्लेज़र के टुकड़ों को रस्सी में बदलकर खिड़की से भाग निकलता!”
His presence in the house still a secret,
घर में उसकी मौजूदगी अभी भी एक रहस्य थी,
Toto was now transferred to a big cage in the servants’ quarters
टोतो को अब नौकरों के क्वार्टर में एक बड़े पिंजरे में रखा गया
where a number of Grandfather’s pets lived very sociably together —
जहाँ दादाजी के कई पालतू जानवर आपस में मिलजुल कर रहते थे —
a tortoise, a pair of rabbits, a tame squirrel and, for a while, my pet goat.
एक कछुआ, खरगोशों की एक जोड़ी, एक पालतू गिलहरी और कुछ समय तक मेरी पालतू बकरी।
But the monkey wouldn’t allow any of his companions to sleep at night;
लेकिन टोतो रात को किसी भी साथी को सोने नहीं देता था;
so Grandfather, who had to leave Dehra Dun next day to collect his pension in Saharanpur, decided to take him along.
इसलिए दादाजी, जिन्हें अगले दिन सहारनपुर जाकर पेंशन लेनी थी, ने तय किया कि वे टोतो को साथ ले जाएंगे।
Unfortunately I could not accompany Grandfather on that trip,
दुर्भाग्यवश मैं उस यात्रा में दादाजी के साथ नहीं जा सका,
but he told me about it afterwards.
लेकिन बाद में उन्होंने मुझे यह सब बताया।
A big black canvas kit-bag was provided for Toto.
टोतो के लिए एक बड़ा काला कैनवस का बैग दिया गया।
This, with some straw at the bottom, became his new abode.
इसके नीचे कुछ सूखी घास रख दी गई और वह उसका नया घर बन गया।
When the bag was closed, there was no escape.
जब बैग बंद हो जाता, तो बाहर निकलने का कोई रास्ता नहीं रहता।
Toto could not get his hands through the opening,
टोतो अपने हाथ बैग के मुंह से बाहर नहीं निकाल सकता था,
and the canvas was too strong for him to bite his way through.
और कैनवस इतना मजबूत था कि वह उसे काटकर बाहर नहीं निकल सकता था।
His efforts to get out only had the effect of making the bag roll about on the floor or occasionally jump into the air —
उसके बाहर निकलने के प्रयासों का केवल यह असर होता था कि बैग फर्श पर लुढ़कता या कभी-कभी हवा में उछल जाता —
an exhibition that attracted a curious crowd of onlookers on the Dehra Dun railway platform.
यह तमाशा देहरादून रेलवे स्टेशन पर यात्रियों की उत्सुक भीड़ को आकर्षित करता।
Toto remained in the bag as far as Saharanpur,
टोतो सहारनपुर तक बैग में ही रहा,
but while Grandfather was producing his ticket at the railway turnstile,
लेकिन जब दादाजी टिकट दिखा रहे थे,
Toto suddenly poked his head out of the bag and gave the ticket-collector a wide grin.
तभी टोतो ने अचानक अपना सिर बैग से बाहर निकाला और टिकट चेकर को एक बड़ी मुस्कान दी।
The poor man was taken aback;
बेचारा टिकट चेकर चौंक गया;
but, with great presence of mind and much to Grandfather’s annoyance, he said,
लेकिन बड़ी चतुराई से, और दादाजी को परेशान करते हुए, उसने कहा,
“Sir, you have a dog with you. You’ll have to pay for it accordingly.”
“सर, आपके पास एक कुत्ता है। आपको उसका किराया देना होगा।”
In vain did Grandfather take Toto out of the bag;
दादाजी ने टोतो को बैग से बाहर निकाला — पर बेकार में।
in vain did he try to prove that a monkey did not qualify as a dog, or even as a quadruped.
उन्होंने यह साबित करने की कोशिश की कि बंदर न तो कुत्ता है, न ही चौपाया — लेकिन व्यर्थ।
Toto was classified a dog by the ticket-collector;
टिकट चेकर ने टोतो को कुत्तों की श्रेणी में रख दिया;
and three rupees was the sum handed over as his fare.
और तीन रुपये किराए के रूप में देने पड़े।
Then Grandfather, just to get his own back, took from his pocket our pet tortoise, and said,
फिर दादाजी, बदला लेने के अंदाज में, अपनी जेब से हमारा पालतू कछुआ निकाले और बोले,
“What must I pay for this, since you charge for all animals?”
“अब इसके लिए कितना दूँ? क्योंकि आप तो हर जानवर का किराया लेते हैं।”
The ticket-collector looked closely at the tortoise,
टिकट चेकर ने ध्यान से कछुए को देखा,
prodded it with his forefinger, gave Grandfather a pleased and triumphant look, and said,
अपनी तर्जनी से उसे हल्के से ठोका, फिर विजयी मुस्कान के साथ बोले,
“No charge. It is not a dog.”
“कोई किराया नहीं। यह कुत्ता नहीं है।”
When Toto was finally accepted by Grandmother
जब दादी ने अंततः टोतो को स्वीकार कर लिया,
he was given a comfortable home in the stable,
उसे अस्तबल में एक आरामदायक घर मिल गया,
where he had for a companion the family donkey, Nana.
जहाँ उसके साथी के रूप में परिवार का गधा, नाना था।
On Toto’s first night in the stable, Grandfather paid him a visit to see if he was comfortable.
टोतो की पहली रात को दादाजी उसे देखने गए कि वह आराम से है या नहीं।
To his surprise he found Nana, without apparent cause,
हैरानी की बात यह थी कि नाना बिना किसी कारण के
pulling at her halter and trying to keep her head as far as possible from a bundle of hay.
अपनी रस्सी खींच रही थी और अपने सिर को घास के गट्ठर से जितना दूर हो सके, रख रही थी।
Grandfather gave Nana a slap across her haunches, and she jerked back, dragging Toto with her.
दादाजी ने नाना को उसके पिछले हिस्से पर थपकी दी, और वह झटके से पीछे हटी — टोतो को खींचते हुए।
He had fastened on to her long ears with his sharp little teeth.
टोतो ने अपने नुकीले छोटे दाँतों से नाना के लंबे कानों को काट रखा था।
Toto and Nana never became friends.
टोतो और नाना कभी दोस्त नहीं बने।
A great treat for Toto during cold winter evenings was the large bowl of warm water given him by Grandmother for his bath.
ठंडी सर्दियों की शामों में टोतो के लिए सबसे बड़ा आनंद था — दादी द्वारा दिया गया गर्म पानी से भरा बड़ा कटोरा नहाने के लिए।
He would cunningly test the temperature with his hand,
वह चालाकी से पहले अपने हाथ से पानी का तापमान जाँचता,
then gradually step into the bath, first one foot, then the other (as he had seen me doing), until he was into the water up to his neck.
फिर धीरे-धीरे एक पैर, फिर दूसरा — जैसे उसने मुझे करते देखा था — और जब तक गर्दन तक पानी में न चला जाए।
Once comfortable, he would take the soap in his hands or feet, and rub himself all over.
एक बार आरामदायक स्थिति में आने के बाद वह साबुन अपने हाथों या पैरों में लेकर पूरे शरीर पर रगड़ता।
When the water became cold, he would get out and run as quickly as he could to the kitchen-fire in order to dry himself.
जब पानी ठंडा हो जाता, वह बाहर आकर रसोई के चूल्हे की ओर दौड़ जाता खुद को सुखाने के लिए।
If anyone laughed at him during this performance,
अगर कोई इस दौरान हँसता,
Toto’s feelings would be hurt and he would refuse to go on with his bath.
तो टोतो की भावनाएँ आहत होतीं और वह नहाना बंद कर देता।
One day Toto nearly succeeded in boiling himself alive.
एक दिन टोतो लगभग खुद को जिंदा उबाल ही बैठा।
A large kitchen kettle had been left on the fire to boil for tea
चाय के लिए रसोई में एक बड़ी केतली आग पर रखी गई थी,
and Toto, finding himself with nothing better to do, decided to remove the lid.
और टोतो, जो बोर हो रहा था, ने उसका ढक्कन हटाने का निर्णय लिया।
Finding the water just warm enough for a bath, he got in, with his head sticking out from the open kettle.
पानी को नहाने लायक गर्म पाकर वह उसमें घुस गया, सिर्फ सिर बाहर निकला हुआ था।
This was just fine for a while, until the water began to boil.
कुछ समय तक तो सब ठीक था, लेकिन जब पानी उबलने लगा…
Toto then raised himself a little; but, finding it cold outside, sat down again.
टोतो थोड़ा उठता, लेकिन बाहर ठंड पाकर वापस बैठ जाता।
He continued hopping up and down for some time, until Grandmother arrived and hauled him, half-boiled, out of the kettle.
वह कुछ समय तक उछलता रहा — जब तक दादी ने आकर उसे केतली से आधा उबला हुआ बाहर नहीं निकाला।
If there is a part of the brain especially devoted to mischief, that part was largely developed in Toto.
अगर मस्तिष्क में कोई हिस्सा विशेष रूप से शरारत के लिए बना हो, तो वह हिस्सा टोतो में बहुत ज्यादा विकसित था।
He was always tearing things to pieces.
वह हमेशा चीजों को फाड़ता रहता था।
Whenever one of my aunts came near him, he made every effort to get hold of her dress and tear a hole in it.
जब भी मेरी कोई मौसी उसके पास आती, वह उनकी ड्रेस पकड़ने और उसमें छेद करने की कोशिश करता।
One day, at lunch-time, a large dish of pullao stood in the centre of the dining-table.
एक दिन, दोपहर के खाने में, खाने की मेज़ पर पुलाव की बड़ी सी प्लेट रखी थी।
We entered the room to find Toto stuffing himself with rice.
हम कमरे में आए तो देखा कि टोतो चावल खा रहा था।
My grandmother screamed — and Toto threw a plate at her.
मेरी दादी चिल्लाईं — और टोतो ने उन पर प्लेट फेंक दी।
One of my aunts rushed forward — and received a glass of water in the face.
एक मौसी दौड़ी — और उनके मुँह पर पानी से भरा गिलास दे मारा।
When Grandfather arrived, Toto picked up the dish of pullao and made his exit through a window.
जब दादाजी आए, टोतो ने पुलाव की थाली उठाई और खिड़की से बाहर निकल गया।
We found him in the branches of the jackfruit tree, the dish still in his arms.
हमने उसे कटहल के पेड़ की शाखाओं में पाया, थाली अब भी उसकी गोद में थी।
He remained there all afternoon, eating slowly through the rice, determined on finishing every grain.
वह पूरा दोपहर वहीं बैठा रहा, धीरे-धीरे चावल खाता रहा, हर दाने को खत्म करने की ठान कर।
And then, in order to spite Grandmother, who had screamed at him,
और फिर, दादी से बदला लेने के लिए, जो उस पर चिल्लाई थीं,
he threw the dish down from the tree, and chattered with delight when it broke into a hundred pieces.
उसने थाली पेड़ से नीचे फेंकी और जब वह सौ टुकड़ों में टूट गई तो वह खुशी से किलकारी मारने लगा।
Obviously Toto was not the sort of pet we could keep for long.
यह स्पष्ट था कि टोतो ऐसा पालतू नहीं था जिसे हम लंबे समय तक रख सकते।
Even Grandfather realised that.
यह बात दादाजी को भी समझ में आ गई थी।
We were not well-to-do, and could not afford the frequent loss of dishes, clothes, curtains and wallpaper.
हम अमीर नहीं थे, और बार-बार बर्तन, कपड़े, परदे और दीवारों का नुकसान सहन नहीं कर सकते थे।
So Grandfather found the tonga-driver, and sold Toto back to him — for only three rupees.
इसलिए दादाजी ने उस टांगेवाले को ढूँढ निकाला और टोतो को सिर्फ तीन रुपये में उसे वापस बेच दिया।
